KS: After you graduated High school what did you do?

RR: I went in the Marine Corps, and spent four years in the Marine Corps.

KS: After your four years in the Marine Corps did you go to college?

RR: Yes, I came over to [Magnolia] A & M College then, which was a junior college. I started here in 1945-46.

KS: How long did you go to school here?

RR: I was here two years of junior college and then I went to the University of Arkansas and spent two years and got my Bachelors of Science degree.

KS: While you were here [Magnolia A&M] was there any sports here?

RR: Yes!, we started football. It was just after the war, World War II. We started football in 1946 and I played that year.

KS: Who did you play against then? Who were the other teams in the conference?

RR: Well, there was Monticello, Hendrix College, Arkansas College, Ouachita, Arkansas Tech.

KS: So it's pretty much the as today's conferences except for Hendrix?

RR: Yes.

KS: When you went to the University of Arkansas did you play any sports up there? Or have any involvement?

RR: Yes, I was the trainer with the 1948 freshman football team. I worked with football, basketball, and I worked with baseball. In '48 some of those boys played pro ball, such as Fred Williams, Chicago Bears; Dave Hanner, Green Bay Packers; and there were a few more which I can't recall right now. There was freshman and varsity teams then and they both played on the freshman team.

KS: You got your Bachelor of Science degree from University of Arkansas. What did you want to do when you went to college, did you know? Or, did you just want to go and figure out after you graduated?

RR: Oh no. I knew I wanted to go to college and get a degree. And I wanted to work with children in some way or the other. I wanted to coach.

KS: You wanted to coach?

RR: Yes.

KS: After you graduated from the University of Arkansas, where did you go?

RR: I came back here and taught one year [at Magnolia A&M]. I taught boys P.E. and I was the Dorm Director in McCrary Hall where Brinson Art Center is. I helped coach football and also had the baseball team.

KS: Oh, you coached the baseball team. How long had the team been going?

RR: This was just the second year back after the war. Coach Watson (W.T.) was my second baseman.

KS: You coached Coach Watson, Wow!! You coached the team for the one year you were here. Was it set up like it is today or was the field different?

RR: No, this field out here (looking out the windows of the new SAU Athletic Department) was nothing but a crawdad hole, so to speak. We had to go in and put a culvert in. A creek ran down through here (where left field foul line is today).
