rally - to come to the aid or support of a person or thing
recitations - saying out loud the things the author was learning (and memorizing)
reclining - resting; stretched out; leaning back
recognized - (while at the train depot) knew, found familiar; (in the case of teachers) spoke to; acknowledged
recollection - remembrance; memory
records - written accounts; all the facts about what a person has done (in this case, while in school); grades
refinement - good manners
registered - signed up for classes and was written in the records as a full student
"registration blanks" - forms or papers that have to be filled out before one can be accepted into a college or university
"registration day" - the day on which students at a college or university sign up for classes
required - supposed to have done
residences - places where people lived; houses or homes
resigned - gave up his position (in this case, at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville for a better position at Hendrix)
responsibility - feeling concern or duty toward
retired - took himself away from his job
return - to come or go back (in this case, the author knew he would not be able to go back to the University in the fall)
roomed - lived in a dorm room
rural - in, having to do with, or like the country
