"came to pass" - happened; occurred

candidate - a person who seeks or is put forward by others for an office or honor

crushed - deeply upset; disappointed; devastated

cultivation - prepared for growing vegetables, flowers, or other crops

cultured - possessing an appreciation of the arts, knowledge, and good taste and manners that are the result of education
