Cognitive Science
Test 3 / 2005
Modified:
4/15/2005
Instructions: Due before 2:10 p.m., Tuesday, April
21.
Answers should be legible (i.e., not hand written), complete,
thoughtful, and articulate. You may consult with me via e-mail as you
develop your answers (probably a good strategy). Shoot for at least
one page per question and do not simply copy and paste answers. Use
quotes to indicate sources you found elsewhere and provide URLs or
references where appropriate. Failure to
properly cite sources may lead to a grade of zero for that
item!
1. Read Friedman's article: It's a flat world, after all (if you do
not have a copy, get one on the shelf outside my office). How did
cognitive science contribute to his vision of a "flat earth.?" Pick
one example (e.g., outsourcing) and trace how cognitive science made
that example possible.
2. Discuss the differences between computer interfaces and physical
interfaces (e.g., real world objects). Use one example from each
domain to illustrate the differences. (Hint: what are the components
of interfaces in each case and how are they made?)
3. Discuss robotics as AI. Is robotics always AI? Why or why not.
Give two examples supporting your answer.
4. Look at www.saumag.edu. Make practical suggestions on how SAU's
page could have better usability.
