Cognitive Science
Test 1 / 2006
Modified:
2006-02-03
Instructions: Due before 2:00 p.m., Tuesday,
February 14
Submit your answers as hard copy. Be sure your answers are
complete.
Answers should be legible (i.e., not hand written), complete,
thoughtful, and articulate. You may consult with me via e-mail as you
develop your answers (probably a good strategy). Shoot for at least
one page per question and do not simply copy and paste answers. Use
quotes to indicate sources you found elsewhere and provide URLs or
references where appropriate. Failure to
properly cite sources may lead to a grade of zero for that
item!
1. Define algorithm and heuristic. Give a detailed example of each.
2. Why is the cell phone an interface? Describe as many ways as you
can how the cell phone functions as an interface.
3. Represent yourself in as many ways as possible. For each
representation tell the medium and code you used.
4. Using Kardas & Milford's Chapter 2, pick ONE of the following
terms and then explain it and why it is important to cognitive
science: analog vs. digital, bandwidth, client-server, or packet
switching
