Instructions: Return completed test on or before thursday, April 15 at 8:00 a.m. Answers should not be handwritten and may be turned in as hard copy, e-mail, or as a Word attachment to e-mail.


1. Describe human memory. How is it organized? What is the sensory register? How do the visual and auditory sensory registers differ? What is short term memory? Describe the structure of short term memory. What is long term memory? What are the subdivisions of long term memory. What is the relationship between episodic and semantic memories? 2. What are the features of problem solving? What is a problem? What is a solution? Pick a classic problem and analyze it. Tell why it is a problem, then take me through its solution.


3. Can humans communicate without spoken language? Describe nonverbal communication and include discussion of the various ways humans communicate nonverbally. Provide examples. Use the 1998 page to find sources.


4. Describe the structure of spoken language. Be sure to include: phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. How does linguistics relate to language?


5. Relate animal cognition to cognitive science. Why should cognitive scientists be interested in animal cognition?
