Cognitive Science

Test 2 / 2008

Modified: 2008-03-06

Instructions: Due before 2:10 p.m., Thursday, March 13.

Use the CS main page and pages you find on your own, and e-mail sent to you as the source for your answers. Submit your answers as hard copy.

Answers should be legible (i.e., not hand written), complete, thoughtful, and articulate. You may consult with me via e-mail as you develop your answers (probably a good strategy). Shoot for at least one page per question (double spaced) and do not simply copy and paste answers. Use quotes to indicate sources you found elsewhere and provide URLs or references where appropriate. Failure to properly cite sources may lead to a grade of zero for that item!

1. Design a robot that can clean a house. Be sure to address issues of structure, symmetry, and size. How will the robot get around? How will it be powered? Now, suggest another design to do the same thing, one that is completely unrelated to the first.

2. Use the Web page: http://www.hf.faa.gov/webtraining/VisualDisplays/VisDisp1.htm as inspiration to design icons for the following things: Kid-friendly bathroom, temperature control, and no parking. Make two icons each, one for the United States and one for the world.

3. Look at Tannen's Web page, http://raysweb.net/poems/articles/tannen.html. Use an example OF YOUR OWN and analyze it according to the principles Tannen shows on that page.
